TMJ Disorder (TMD)

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) refers to a painful dysfunction of the jaw.  It is often associated with trauma to the jaw, extended dental procedures or psychological discomfort.

 

Symptoms Associated with TMD

  • Headaches

  • Pain that radiates into the face and neck

  • Stiffness and tightness of the jaw muscles

  • Limited range of motion or locking of the jaw

  • Pain/inflammation around the temporomandibular joint

  • Popping or clicking noise when opening or closing mouth

 

Common Causes of TMJ Pain:

  • Trauma to the joint

  • Joint laxity

  • Muscle tightness or trigger points

  • Inflammation and/or arthritis

  • Extensive dental and orthodontic treatments

  • Occlusal abnormalities (upper and lower teeth closing)

  • Psychosocial factors such as chronic stress, anxiety, 

      depression, or pain

 

Treatment options for TMD include

  • IASTYM

  • Dry needling

  • Manual therapy

  • Relaxation techniques

  • Therapeutic use of ice/heat, infra-red)

  • Home exercise program, stretching, and jaw positioning exercises
